Client-side search for a Hugo site
Hugo does not need a server to provide useful site search. It can generate a JSON index at build time, then Fuse.js can search that file in the browser.
This example is intentionally self-contained, but it reflects the libraries and Hugo APIs available when it was written in 2020. Start by adding JSON to the home page outputs in config.toml; HTML and RSS remain alongside it.

Build the JSON index
Create layouts/_default/index.json. The template collects the fields that search will use and serializes them as JSON:

Search and highlight the results
Create static/js/search.js with the following code. It loads Hugo’s index with jQuery, searches it with Fuse.js, renders matching pages, and uses Mark.js to highlight the query.

The weights make title matches more important than body, tag, or category matches. threshold: 0.0 makes matching strict; raise it if you want Fuse.js to accept fuzzier results.
Give the search page a URL
Create content/search.md:

Nothing in this Markdown body is shown. The content file exists to give `/search` a page and select the `search` layout.
The low sitemap priority marks it as an unimportant page for crawlers.
Add the search layout
Create layouts/_default/search.html. This loads the three libraries, displays the form, and provides the HTML template used for each result:

That is the whole path: Hugo builds /index.json, the form sends the query as ?s=..., and the script renders the matches in the browser. For a small static site this is a practical solution; for a very large archive I would avoid sending the entire content index to every visitor.
