What makes a good laptop for web development?

There is no single best laptop for web development. The right machine depends on what you build, which tools you run, and whether it spends most of its life on a desk or in a bag.

Start with the actual workload

A browser, editor, local server, and terminal do not demand a workstation. Several containers, virtual machines, large builds, or local AI tools are a different workload. Buy for the work you expect to do, with some headroom, rather than the most demanding setup you can imagine.

Choose an SSD with room for source code, dependencies, container images, simulators, and the operating system. If memory or storage is soldered, the purchase decision matters even more because an upgrade later may be impossible.

The parts you touch all day

Screen quality is not just resolution. Text clarity, usable brightness, scaling, and enough vertical space all affect long sessions. An external monitor can solve screen size at a desk, but it cannot improve the laptop display when you travel.

The keyboard and trackpad are personal. Reviews help, but trying the keyboard is better if you can. Check the layout as well as the feel—an awkward arrow-key arrangement or missing key can remain annoying for years.

Portability always has a cost. A larger laptop gives you more screen and often better cooling, while a smaller one is easier to carry. Include the charger when comparing weight, and make sure the battery lasts through the way you actually work.

Operating system and ports

Linux, macOS, and Windows can all be good web-development environments. The choice may be decided by the rest of the job: Safari testing and native Apple development require Apple tooling, while a company stack may depend on Windows. Linux offers a direct Unix environment, and Windows has a broad tool ecosystem as well as WSL.

Also check the unglamorous details: enough ports, support for the external displays you use, a good webcam, and repair or warranty options where you live.

The best laptop is the one that removes friction from your normal day. Spend money first on the limits you will feel every hour—memory, display, keyboard, and battery—and treat a current model shortlist as the final step, not the starting point.
